Usually to get into the spirit, the average March Madness a fan will dawn the lucky jersey, fill out a bracket to try and win some money by guessing which teams make the Final Four and sit in front of the TV for way longer than is healthy.
This year, however, Oregon Urology in Springfield, Oregon – just a 5-minute drive from the University of Oregon – is encouraging men to really get into the spirit for March Madness by scheduling a vasectomy. To the first 24 men who set up an appointment, Oregon Urology will supply the patient with pizza delivery, sports magazines and a bag of frozen peas to numb the pain while the patient lounges in front of the TV.
I first heard the promo while listening to The Score, a local sports talk radio show. I thought it was both hilarious and brilliant, from a PR perspective. The promotion certainly has created some buzz. This whole week, Oregon Urology has been all over the local news. And it has even garnered some national exposure. Joe Favorito’s Sports Marketing and PR Round Up thinks that the promotion is the best out there thus far.
It is tough to find a new angle when promoting products or services around an event like March Madness. Ad teams around the county will spend unthinkable amounts of money to mount campaigns linked to March Madness. So I have to admit that I was quite giddy to see that a small urology clinic in Oregon is leading the pack in the minds of PR professionals.
This is priceless! What a great marketing/PR idea . . . I’d love to find out how many “procedures” are scheduled for during March Madness. . .
